SUMMARY:Data Session: 7th October\, Tiffany Hutchins: Topicalising and negotiating challenging situations with ‘comic strip conversations’
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as an online data session:\nTeams Meeting link:\nJoin: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/339175119478785?p=G7IE0gLbkrR3b0Lvwo\nMeeting ID: 339 175 119 478 785\nPasscode: Ut7AY9s9 \nSession details: Comic strip conversations (CSCs; Gray\, 1998) incorporate drawing\, writing\, and conversation as major components of the activity\, and they use a basic set of symbols (e.g.\, talking and thinking bubbles) to make explicit what people say and think. The use of CSCs is a dynamic intervention process that is intended to allow a child to revisit and elaborate on a past personal experience (including challenging and successful social experiences)\, highlighting the talking and thinking around different events that lead to behavioral responses and different people’s thoughts\, emotions\, and perspectives.\nFor the intervention in which Patrick and his parents participated\, CSCs were presented on multiple occasions. Each CSC focused on the theme of conflict (and how to successfully overcome it) between Patrick and Brendon. Although the theme was constant\, the specific situations recounted and analyzed varied and were usually determined by Patrick in collaboration with the clinician and a parent who was able to report on recent instances that had occurred in the home. In total\, Patrick participated in 12 CSCs\, aligning with the recommendation that Social Stories and CSCs be administered with repetition. \nTranscript on request.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 1st July\, Graham Johnson: News delivery in the emergency department
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details:\nThis week we will be doing some unmotivated looking at a news delivery sequence from the TV series “24 hours in A&E”. Before the sequence the doctor involved has already explained the seriousness of the situation to the patient’s relatives. We will be reviewing the bedside interaction that follows\, between the doctor and the patient. As a warning\, the patient is receiving the news that she is too unwell for an operation\, and that they will be “keeping her comfortable” and that she will be not leaving hospital. As this is from a television series\, the camera setting is not ideal for CA work\, but still contains some useful data that aligns with my research focus on news delivery in the emergency department.  \nTranscript on request.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 24th June\, Laura Jenkins: Police interview with kidnap suspect
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: Sensitive topic: caution advised\nThe data comes from the high-profile case of Sarah Everard\, who went missing in London in 2021 triggering a large-scale search and investigation. Police narrowed their focus to a serving police officer\, Wayne Couzens\, whose movements and vehicle were linked to the incident. The focus of the data session is the urgent interview conducted with Wayne Couzens to seek information about Sarah’s whereabouts. In the extract\, epistemological matters (who knows what) and institutional agendas (what is the purpose of the interview) come to the fore. The data session will consider these elements and other analytic foci that surface in our discussions. \nTranscript on request.

DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: This session draws on data from my ongoing PhD research on language socialization in homoparental families\, based on video recordings of everyday interactions. The two excerpts come from mealtime situations within the same family. From a conversation-analytic and membership categorization perspective\, I examine how “teams” are constructed and negotiated in interaction. In the first excerpt\, team membership is organized through references to surnames and shared “seeds\,” alongside embodied resources such as gesture. In the second excerpt\, team formation emerges around a shared food preference\, before being taken up and reformulated by the father in relation to family membership. I’m interested in how participants use different resources to build categories of belonging\, and how “team” and “family” become linked in the course of the interaction. \nTranscript on request.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 6th May\, Robert Prettner: Vaccination discussions in a Dutch Well-Child Clinic
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: The collection consists of 11 video-recorded conversations between parents of young children and a doctor talking about childhood vaccination. Data is in Dutch and was collected at an anthroposophical Well-Child Clinic in the Netherlands. These specialized clinics take a holistic approach to health and vaccination and are therefore typically visited by vaccine-hesitant parents. In the selected fragments\, the doctor discussed the risks of various vaccine-preventable diseases and helps parents with assessing the risk factors of their unique situation. The analytic focus will be on the doctor’s questions to tailor risk assessments towards the parents’ individual situations (e.g.\, “Do you have a dog?”). What are the functions of such prompts relative to similar risk assessments lacking those prompts? \nTranscript on request.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 11th March\, Mirko Demasi & Søren Beck Nielsen: “It’s not the end of the world”: climate anxiety as the topic of public debate
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: One of the robust findings of climate change communication research is that debates tend to reveal disagreements about implications rather than facts themselves. That is\, debates predominately evolve around the climate crisis’ implications in terms of possible responses: do we really need mitigative actions? Who should ‘step up’ and take the lead? Who should pay the price that conversion costs? Etc. This study examines another type of implication that is debated in public discourse: how to psychologically respond to the climate crisis and its prospects of various degrees of rising temperatures\, sea level rising\, and increased occurrences of extreme weather events depending upon how much and how fast we collectively decarbonize. More specifically\, we examine how climate anxiety is made the topic of public debate and with which consequences. \nFor the DARG data session\, we would like to share data from a Danish public service television progam called Debatten (i.e. “the debate”). It is somewhat comparable the UK’s Question Time\, but without questions from the audience. Each week\, Debatten picks up a current political topic that is debated among interviewees who are constituted by prominent politicians (e.g.\, ministers\, leaders of the opposition\, MPs etc.)\, scholars\, stakeholders\, various representatives (e.g.\, representing interest organizations\, unions\, policy institutes\, particular businesses) etc. Spatially\, the show is organized to form a a right angle. Producers place panel participants with values\, which are typically associated with left wing ideologies\, on the left axis\, whilst occupants on the right axis are participants with values that typically associate with right wing ideologies. We have selected excerpts where a very prominent neoliberal Danish politician debates with young climate activists whether or not younger generations should fear the future. \nTranscript on request.

In this session we will look at video data recorded by a person living with a learning disability in their own home. They use a LLM-based virtual assistant as part of their daily routine of self-care\, medication\, and planning\, as well as for scheduled conversations on given topics such as wrestling or technology. This will be a session of unmotivated looking but might also explore broader questions about ‘atypicality’ in relation to either analyst or participant orientations. \nTranscript: DARG Data Session – Sentai Data 18-02-26
