SUMMARY:Data Session: 11th March\, Mirko Demasi & Søren Beck Nielsen: “It’s not the end of the world”: climate anxiety as the topic of public debate
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: One of the robust findings of climate change communication research is that debates tend to reveal disagreements about implications rather than facts themselves. That is\, debates predominately evolve around the climate crisis’ implications in terms of possible responses: do we really need mitigative actions? Who should ‘step up’ and take the lead? Who should pay the price that conversion costs? Etc. This study examines another type of implication that is debated in public discourse: how to psychologically respond to the climate crisis and its prospects of various degrees of rising temperatures\, sea level rising\, and increased occurrences of extreme weather events depending upon how much and how fast we collectively decarbonize. More specifically\, we examine how climate anxiety is made the topic of public debate and with which consequences. \nFor the DARG data session\, we would like to share data from a Danish public service television progam called Debatten (i.e. “the debate”). It is somewhat comparable the UK’s Question Time\, but without questions from the audience. Each week\, Debatten picks up a current political topic that is debated among interviewees who are constituted by prominent politicians (e.g.\, ministers\, leaders of the opposition\, MPs etc.)\, scholars\, stakeholders\, various representatives (e.g.\, representing interest organizations\, unions\, policy institutes\, particular businesses) etc. Spatially\, the show is organized to form a a right angle. Producers place panel participants with values\, which are typically associated with left wing ideologies\, on the left axis\, whilst occupants on the right axis are participants with values that typically associate with right wing ideologies. We have selected excerpts where a very prominent neoliberal Danish politician debates with young climate activists whether or not younger generations should fear the future. \nTranscript on request.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 18th February\, Hetty Sargent\, Arthur Shoorens & Saul Albert: 'atypical' spoken interactions with an LLM-based smart speaker
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH0:13 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: Large Language Models (LLMs) are an increasingly ubiquitous aspect of daily interaction – and are now becoming more common in voice interfaces such as smart speakers. In this session we will look at video data recorded by a person living with a learning disability in their own home. They use a LLM-based virtual assistant as part of their daily routine of self-care\, medication\, and planning\, as well as for scheduled conversations on given topics such as wrestling or technology. This will be a session of unmotivated looking but might also explore broader questions about ‘atypicality’ in relation to either analyst or participant orientations. \nTranscript: DARG Data Session – Sentai Data 18-02-26

The extract will show a conversation between two uni classmates at a university in the north of England. The participants engage in talk about absent third parties known to both of them\, exchanging positive and negative assessments and experiences around their character. The data session will focus on whether this constitutes gossip and what “doing gossip” implies\, how it is organised\, how participants manage their entries and exits from it\, what linguistic and multimodal features are deployed by participants. Observations on other aspects arising from the extract are also welcome! \nTranscript on request.

DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: This data session focuses on human’s navigating outdoor spaces with their canine companions\, specifically whilst dog walking and during the popular Saturday morning community running experience Parkrun. I am interested more broadly in the phenomena of ‘dog facilitated social interaction’ and it is under this umbrella these data can be considered. The behaviour of the dog/s in question could be labelled as problematic and/or reactive\, and the owner appears sensitised to this. \nTranscript on request.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 8th October\, Sanaa Hyder: Storytelling in primary care consultations between General Practitioners and ethnic minority patients
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: The patient (P) is a 47-year-old woman\, who has a GP appointment to discuss her recent allergy flare-up (including itching\, skin rash and breathing difficulties)\, and mental health symptoms. Following the opening of the GP consultation\, the patient shares an account of her daughter calling the ambulance the night before as the patient had trouble breathing. The patient reports that her symptoms got better eventually after taking the allergy medication she was given\, but her symptoms seem to be recurring and getting worse. The GP asks the patient briefly about her allergy symptoms and allergy tablets. The sequence presented in the extract is about the patient’s history\, in relation to allergy testing. I am interested in the interactional practices used by participants to manage the telling of stories in consultations between General Practitioners (GPs) and ethnic minority patients.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 1st October\, Saul Albert & Hetty Sargent: Living with Language Models: everyday talk involving an LLM-based virtual assistant
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: Large Language Models (LLMs) are an increasingly ubiquitous aspect of daily interaction. In this session we will look at video data recorded by a person living with a learning disability in their own home. They use a LLM-based virtual assistant as part of their daily routine of self-care\, medication\, and planning\, as well as for scheduled conversations on given topics such as wrestling or technology. This will be a session of unmotivated looking but might also explore questions about ‘virtual companionship’\, agency\, and whether user-utterances in this environment constitute something like Goffmanian ‘self-talk’\, or should be understood and analysed as interactionally organised activities. \nTranscript: Sentai Data

SUMMARY:Online workshop in conversation analysis and healthcare interactions
DESCRIPTION:Led by Marco Pino and co-organised by Saul Albert\, Charles Antaki\, and Katie Jordin \nLoughborough University \nThursday 11th and Friday 12th September 2025 \nConversation analysis (CA) is used increasingly in the scientific study of diverse health care and medical interactions\, ranging from primary to secondary and tertiary care settings. CA has been used to examine numerous activities\, from how patients introduce their problems to the ways in which medical decisions are negotiated and communicated. CA studies range from basic work on the fundamentals of human interaction\, to applied research aimed at contributing to service improvement. \nWhat does this workshop cover? \nThe workshop will provide an overview of the application of CA to healthcare interactions\, including interactions between medical doctors\, patients\, and family members\, and interactions with other healthcare professionals. The workshop will include in-depth information and practical work on CA’s methodology including data analysis and examination of some key findings of CA research in healthcare. The workshop aims to enable learning and enhancement of participants’ skills in CA’s methods of analysis. \nHow is the workshop structured? \nThis 2-day workshop will run from 10am to 3.30pm (BST) on the first day and 9am-4pm (BST) on the second day. It will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams. \nPresentations by the facilitators will cover fundamental aspects of CA and its applications to the study of healthcare interactions. The workshop will feature practical sessions and small-group work on video data provided by the facilitators. There will be a strong emphasis on hands-on experience of working with data alongside and discussion with facilitators. We will ask participants to complete a short activity in their own time after the end of the first workshop day. There will also be some preparatory readings ahead of the workshop. \nWho is the workshop for? \nThe workshop is open to postgraduates\, post-docs\, researchers\, practitioners\, and faculty who have some familiarity with CA as a research methodology (including CA transcription conventions). \nThe number of participants will be restricted to 20 to maximise opportunities for participation in the online environment. \nRegistration fee: \n– For employed academics\, practitioners\, and PhD students with training budgets: £150 \n– For unwaged academics\, practitioners\, and PhD students without training budgets: £30 \n– Commercial applicants: please get in touch with us to discuss your participation \nWe encourage potential attenders who are unwaged or otherwise less able to afford the registration \nto contact the organisers as fees are negotiable in some circumstances. \nTo apply \nPlease send an email to m.pino@lboro.ac.uk introducing yourself and telling us about your existing knowledge of CA (including through self-study) and your plans for using CA in your own research or practice. \nDeadline for applications: 13th June 2025. Decisions will be communicated by the 20th of June 2025. \nWe will allocate places based on these criteria: \n\nBeing an applicant from regions where there are fewer CA training opportunities (see http://emcawiki.net/Where_to_study_EMCA)\nFamiliarity with CA
