SUMMARY:Data session: 22nd October\, Sofie Tomova-Olsen: Discussions on initiating GLP1-RA for weight loss in a weight management programme
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) for weight loss have received much public and clinical attention in the last couple of years. In this data session\, we will look at a recording of a consultation between a dietitian and a participant in a weight management programme. In the excerpt\, they discuss the possible initiation of medication after the participant has gained weight. The excerpt is part of a larger collection exploring how dietitians and participants co-construct the role of medications in managing obesity\, specifically focusing on moments of initiation during the first phase of the intervention. The data is in Danish\, with English translations provided. \nTranscript on request. \n

SUMMARY:Data Session: 8th October\, Sanaa Hyder: Storytelling in primary care consultations between General Practitioners and ethnic minority patients
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: The patient (P) is a 47-year-old woman\, who has a GP appointment to discuss her recent allergy flare-up (including itching\, skin rash and breathing difficulties)\, and mental health symptoms. Following the opening of the GP consultation\, the patient shares an account of her daughter calling the ambulance the night before as the patient had trouble breathing. The patient reports that her symptoms got better eventually after taking the allergy medication she was given\, but her symptoms seem to be recurring and getting worse. The GP asks the patient briefly about her allergy symptoms and allergy tablets. The sequence presented in the extract is about the patient’s history\, in relation to allergy testing. I am interested in the interactional practices used by participants to manage the telling of stories in consultations between General Practitioners (GPs) and ethnic minority patients.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 1st October\, Saul Albert & Hetty Sargent: Living with Language Models: everyday talk involving an LLM-based virtual assistant
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: Large Language Models (LLMs) are an increasingly ubiquitous aspect of daily interaction. In this session we will look at video data recorded by a person living with a learning disability in their own home. They use a LLM-based virtual assistant as part of their daily routine of self-care\, medication\, and planning\, as well as for scheduled conversations on given topics such as wrestling or technology. This will be a session of unmotivated looking but might also explore questions about ‘virtual companionship’\, agency\, and whether user-utterances in this environment constitute something like Goffmanian ‘self-talk’\, or should be understood and analysed as interactionally organised activities. \nTranscript: Sentai Data

SUMMARY:Online workshop in conversation analysis and healthcare interactions
DESCRIPTION:Led by Marco Pino and co-organised by Saul Albert\, Charles Antaki\, and Katie Jordin \nLoughborough University \nThursday 11th and Friday 12th September 2025 \nConversation analysis (CA) is used increasingly in the scientific study of diverse health care and medical interactions\, ranging from primary to secondary and tertiary care settings. CA has been used to examine numerous activities\, from how patients introduce their problems to the ways in which medical decisions are negotiated and communicated. CA studies range from basic work on the fundamentals of human interaction\, to applied research aimed at contributing to service improvement. \nWhat does this workshop cover? \nThe workshop will provide an overview of the application of CA to healthcare interactions\, including interactions between medical doctors\, patients\, and family members\, and interactions with other healthcare professionals. The workshop will include in-depth information and practical work on CA’s methodology including data analysis and examination of some key findings of CA research in healthcare. The workshop aims to enable learning and enhancement of participants’ skills in CA’s methods of analysis. \nHow is the workshop structured? \nThis 2-day workshop will run from 10am to 3.30pm (BST) on the first day and 9am-4pm (BST) on the second day. It will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams. \nPresentations by the facilitators will cover fundamental aspects of CA and its applications to the study of healthcare interactions. The workshop will feature practical sessions and small-group work on video data provided by the facilitators. There will be a strong emphasis on hands-on experience of working with data alongside and discussion with facilitators. We will ask participants to complete a short activity in their own time after the end of the first workshop day. There will also be some preparatory readings ahead of the workshop. \nWho is the workshop for? \nThe workshop is open to postgraduates\, post-docs\, researchers\, practitioners\, and faculty who have some familiarity with CA as a research methodology (including CA transcription conventions). \nThe number of participants will be restricted to 20 to maximise opportunities for participation in the online environment. \nRegistration fee: \n– For employed academics\, practitioners\, and PhD students with training budgets: £150 \n– For unwaged academics\, practitioners\, and PhD students without training budgets: £30 \n– Commercial applicants: please get in touch with us to discuss your participation \nWe encourage potential attenders who are unwaged or otherwise less able to afford the registration \nto contact the organisers as fees are negotiable in some circumstances. \nTo apply \nPlease send an email to m.pino@lboro.ac.uk introducing yourself and telling us about your existing knowledge of CA (including through self-study) and your plans for using CA in your own research or practice. \nDeadline for applications: 13th June 2025. Decisions will be communicated by the 20th of June 2025. \nWe will allocate places based on these criteria: \n\nBeing an applicant from regions where there are fewer CA training opportunities (see http://emcawiki.net/Where_to_study_EMCA)\nFamiliarity with CA

The SSIA\, a government agency responsible for social insurances (e.g.\, parental benefit)\, posts updates on laws\, rules\, and how the parental benefit system works. Parents can ask questions\, which are accessible to anyone to read and comment on. The SSIA advises users to ask only general questions and informs that they can only provide general responses. However\, parents often ask personal questions\, which practitioners must address. This session focuses on a thread where a parent has asked such a personal question. I am interested in exploring how parents’ questions and the social actions they project are reciprocated (or not) in the practitioners’ responses. Data is in Swedish\, with an English translation. \nTranscript: Data Session 7th May

At the same time\, he is seeking help for\nhis urological symptoms which are getting in the way of his ‘namaz’\n(i.e.\, an Urdu word for ‘prayers’ done throughout the day as a\nMuslim\, for which you need to be physically clean). After a brief\nexamination\, the General Practitioner (GP) diagnoses a chest\ninfection and prescribes a nasal spray and antibiotics. He also\nshows the patient how to access his health records and results for\nhis previous medical tests\, including for his urological symptoms\nusing the NHS app on the patient’s phone. DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nParticipants with experience in the principles of Baháʼí consultation apply them in various settings. \nBahá’í consultation is a form of collective decision-making that emphasizes unity\, detachment from personal opinions\, and the shared search for truth. It involves open and respectful dialogue\, where individuals contribute their perspectives without insisting on their own views\, and the group strives to reach consensus through mutual understanding. A distinctive feature of many Bahá’í consultations is that they begin with a period of prayer\, creating a reflective and unified atmosphere before deliberation begins. \nIn this session\, we will examine one or two openings of Baháʼí consultations to explore how they are framed by the interactants. \nThe data is drawn from a corpus of recorded Baháʼí consultations\, part of the PhD research of Jean-Marie Nau (Educational Sciences\, Faculty of Humanities\, Education and Social Sciences\, University of Luxembourg)\, supervised by Assoc. Prof. Patrick Sunnen. This research investigates the question: \n“How are principles of unity & collective inquiry interactionally accomplished in Baháʼí consultations\, and what do these reveal about the wider applicability of this consultation model in diverse settings?”

DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nThis data session focuses on an interactional sequence among high-skilled migrants in Finland\, recorded during a dinner gathering at the home of one of the participants. The host is French-Indian\, and his guests are Italian\, German\, and Palestinian-Jordanian. Following dinner\, the group continues chatting in the living room. At some point\, the conversation turns to cycling. In this specific sequence\, the Italian guest questions her Palestinian-Jordanian friend about why she does not know how to bike. The latter responds by contextualizing her upbringing in Amman\, Jordan. I am interested in exploring how the White-Eurocentric lens shapes questioning practices and expected norms\, and how micro-coloniality is enacted in everyday social interactions. \nTranscript: \nDARG_Ibnelkaid_22_01_25_micro-coloniality
