SUMMARY:Online workshop in conversation analysis and healthcare interactions
DESCRIPTION:Led by Marco Pino and co-organised by Saul Albert\, Charles Antaki\, and Katie Jordin \nLoughborough University \nThursday 11th and Friday 12th September 2025 \nConversation analysis (CA) is used increasingly in the scientific study of diverse health care and medical interactions\, ranging from primary to secondary and tertiary care settings. CA has been used to examine numerous activities\, from how patients introduce their problems to the ways in which medical decisions are negotiated and communicated. CA studies range from basic work on the fundamentals of human interaction\, to applied research aimed at contributing to service improvement. \nWhat does this workshop cover? \nThe workshop will provide an overview of the application of CA to healthcare interactions\, including interactions between medical doctors\, patients\, and family members\, and interactions with other healthcare professionals. The workshop will include in-depth information and practical work on CA’s methodology including data analysis and examination of some key findings of CA research in healthcare. The workshop aims to enable learning and enhancement of participants’ skills in CA’s methods of analysis. \nHow is the workshop structured? \nThis 2-day workshop will run from 10am to 3.30pm (BST) on the first day and 9am-4pm (BST) on the second day. It will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams. \nPresentations by the facilitators will cover fundamental aspects of CA and its applications to the study of healthcare interactions. The workshop will feature practical sessions and small-group work on video data provided by the facilitators. There will be a strong emphasis on hands-on experience of working with data alongside and discussion with facilitators. We will ask participants to complete a short activity in their own time after the end of the first workshop day. There will also be some preparatory readings ahead of the workshop. \nWho is the workshop for? \nThe workshop is open to postgraduates\, post-docs\, researchers\, practitioners\, and faculty who have some familiarity with CA as a research methodology (including CA transcription conventions). \nThe number of participants will be restricted to 20 to maximise opportunities for participation in the online environment. \nRegistration fee: \n– For employed academics\, practitioners\, and PhD students with training budgets: £150 \n– For unwaged academics\, practitioners\, and PhD students without training budgets: £30 \n– Commercial applicants: please get in touch with us to discuss your participation \nWe encourage potential attenders who are unwaged or otherwise less able to afford the registration \nto contact the organisers as fees are negotiable in some circumstances. \nTo apply \nPlease send an email to m.pino@lboro.ac.uk introducing yourself and telling us about your existing knowledge of CA (including through self-study) and your plans for using CA in your own research or practice. \nDeadline for applications: 13th June 2025. Decisions will be communicated by the 20th of June 2025. \nWe will allocate places based on these criteria: \n\nBeing an applicant from regions where there are fewer CA training opportunities (see http://emcawiki.net/Where_to_study_EMCA)\nFamiliarity with CA

SUMMARY:Data Session: 7th May 2025\, Frida Höglund: Question-answer sequences in digital text-based service encounters
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nThe data is from a collection of digital (text-based) service encounters on the Swedish Social Insurance Agency’s (SSIA) open-access Facebook page for parents. The SSIA\, a government agency responsible for social insurances (e.g.\, parental benefit)\, posts updates on laws\, rules\, and how the parental benefit system works. Parents can ask questions\, which are accessible to anyone to read and comment on. The SSIA advises users to ask only general questions and informs that they can only provide general responses. However\, parents often ask personal questions\, which practitioners must address. This session focuses on a thread where a parent has asked such a personal question. I am interested in exploring how parents’ questions and the social actions they project are reciprocated (or not) in the practitioners’ responses. Data is in Swedish\, with an English translation. \nTranscript: Data Session 7th May

SUMMARY:Data Session: 30th April 2025\, Sanaa Hyder : Primary care consultations between General Practitioners and ethnic minority patients in the UK
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nThe patient (P) is a 50-year-old Pakistani man\, who has\nhad surgery for ‘polyps’ in his nose in the past. He now has\nproblems with a blocked nose or a runny nose\, which affects his work\nas a TV presenter. P also complains about other recurring flu\nsymptoms\, such as a fever. At the same time\, he is seeking help for\nhis urological symptoms which are getting in the way of his ‘namaz’\n(i.e.\, an Urdu word for ‘prayers’ done throughout the day as a\nMuslim\, for which you need to be physically clean). After a brief\nexamination\, the General Practitioner (GP) diagnoses a chest\ninfection and prescribes a nasal spray and antibiotics. He also\nshows the patient how to access his health records and results for\nhis previous medical tests\, including for his urological symptoms\nusing the NHS app on the patient’s phone. The discussion below takes\nplace towards the end of the consultation. I am interested in how\nparticipants make ‘culture’ relevant or orient to it in interactions\nbetween General Practitioners (GPs) and ethnic minority patients. \nTranscript: DARG_Hyder_30April2025

SUMMARY:Data Session: 26th February\, Jean Marie Nau: Exploring Openings in Baháʼí Consultation
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nParticipants with experience in the principles of Baháʼí consultation apply them in various settings. \nBahá’í consultation is a form of collective decision-making that emphasizes unity\, detachment from personal opinions\, and the shared search for truth. It involves open and respectful dialogue\, where individuals contribute their perspectives without insisting on their own views\, and the group strives to reach consensus through mutual understanding. A distinctive feature of many Bahá’í consultations is that they begin with a period of prayer\, creating a reflective and unified atmosphere before deliberation begins. \nIn this session\, we will examine one or two openings of Baháʼí consultations to explore how they are framed by the interactants. \nThe data is drawn from a corpus of recorded Baháʼí consultations\, part of the PhD research of Jean-Marie Nau (Educational Sciences\, Faculty of Humanities\, Education and Social Sciences\, University of Luxembourg)\, supervised by Assoc. Prof. Patrick Sunnen. This research investigates the question: \n“How are principles of unity & collective inquiry interactionally accomplished in Baháʼí consultations\, and what do these reveal about the wider applicability of this consultation model in diverse settings?”

SUMMARY:Data Session: 22nd January 2024\, Samira Ibnelkaïd: Micro-Coloniality in Everyday Interaction: Negotiating Norms\, Knowledge\, and Identity in Migrant Contexts
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nThis data session focuses on an interactional sequence among high-skilled migrants in Finland\, recorded during a dinner gathering at the home of one of the participants. The host is French-Indian\, and his guests are Italian\, German\, and Palestinian-Jordanian. Following dinner\, the group continues chatting in the living room. At some point\, the conversation turns to cycling. In this specific sequence\, the Italian guest questions her Palestinian-Jordanian friend about why she does not know how to bike. The latter responds by contextualizing her upbringing in Amman\, Jordan. I am interested in exploring how the White-Eurocentric lens shapes questioning practices and expected norms\, and how micro-coloniality is enacted in everyday social interactions. \nTranscript: \nDARG_Ibnelkaid_22_01_25_micro-coloniality

SUMMARY:CA for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Our next one-day CA for Beginners workshop will be held remotely on Jan 16th 2025. \nThe day will start at 10.00 am and end at 5.00 pm\, UK time. \nLed by Loughborough faculty Charles Antaki\, Emma Richardson\, Magnus Hamman\, Tilly Flint and Saul Albert\, the workshop is meant for anyone who has a growing interest in CA – perhaps they have heard of it\, come across it in their studies\, or are working in a group which uses it as an approach for research. It would also be useful for anyone starting out on research which may take them down the line of analysing talk in great detail. \nThe kinds of questions we will cover include:\n• What is the relationship between CA and discourse analysis?\n• Why does CA insist on the close analysis of talk\, with very detailed transcription?\n• What does CA us about what people are doing in everyday life?\n• Can we use CA to understand institutional encounters\, for example medical consultations or police interviews?\n• How can I use CA in my research? \nThe day will include hands-on group work on: – How to transcribe\, how to identify the components of turns – How to identify actions – How to build a collection – How to develop an argument in conversation analysis \nCost: £40 for waged or funded academics (staff members\, post-docs\, funded postgraduates..) If you are unwaged or unfunded\, please contact us to see about a waiver. \nIf you work for a commercial organisation and would like to attend\, please get in touch with us to discuss a fee. \nAttendance and registration: £40 for the day (online)\nPlease note: numbers are kept low. \nRegistration will be via the Loughborough University Online Store.\nPreference will be given to those already on the waiting list.\nFor more information: email Charles Antaki at this address: c.antaki@lboro.ac.uk.

DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nIntroduction and Focus: \nI’m curious whether the ways that participants in a Baháʼí consultation carry out their activities are\, or are not\, consistent with what authoritative texts say about that activity. For a recent PhD poster presentation\, I looked at a deliberation on a treatment method during a Baháʼí consultation: What Up- and Downgrades tell us about how participants convey their preferences. Further analytic insights are welcome. \nElements of Baháʼí consultation: \n\nFrank\, candid\, dispassionate\, unfettered\, and cordial\, courteous and loving expression of opinions.\nDetachment from personal views.\nWhen an idea is put forth it becomes at once the property of the group. Although this notion sounds simple\, it is perhaps the most profound principle of consultation.\nA means of harmonizing points of view\, promoting unity among community members.\nAimed at building consensus.\nConsultations do not always require a final decision; often\, the objective is simply to exchange views to clarify matters and foster a unified vision.\n\nSession Details: The transcript is part of a 55-minute Bahá’í consultation among three volunteer children’s class teachers and Amy\, a regional support giver. The extract starts 36 minutes into the consultation and lasts 6 minutes. \n

SUMMARY:Data Session: 27th November\, Marc Alexander: Managing talk about suicide
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nContent Warning: Due to the sensitive nature of the data\, please do consider if and how you might be affected before deciding to attend. \nManaging talk about suicide \nThe data for this session are two audio recordings of calls to a mental health charity helpline based in the UK. In the extracts\, callers talk about having suicidal thoughts and ways of committing suicide. In one extract the caller seemingly ends the call prematurely. I’m particularly interested in how suicidal talk is managed by call-takers\, although all analytic insights would be very welcome. \n  \nTranscript: DARG transcript 27_11_2024

SUMMARY:Data Session: 13th November\, Hans-Joachim Belz: CA concepts visualized.
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nWith its comprehensive conceptualization of talk-in-interaction\, conversation analysis (CA) is beneficial to a wide range of academic and commercial endeavours. For many new to the field\, however\, the daunting amount of nuanced and heavily interconnected concepts can seem overwhelming at first. \nIn this session\, an early draft of a multi-layered visualization of CA’s concepts and their relations is presented. The “interactive map” is intended to serve as an orientation guide to beginners and intermediates. \nThe goal of the session is to provide an early assessment of the potential utility of the project and to gain input and feedback from CA experts and beginners alike. The project will be published under Creative Commons (freely available from Github and other sources). \nPapers: \nOutlook Epistemics_V241110 \nVisual CA Concepts_V241110 compressed
