SUMMARY:Data Session: 26th February\, Jean Marie Nau: Exploring Openings in Baháʼí Consultation
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nParticipants with experience in the principles of Baháʼí consultation apply them in various settings. \nBahá’í consultation is a form of collective decision-making that emphasizes unity\, detachment from personal opinions\, and the shared search for truth. It involves open and respectful dialogue\, where individuals contribute their perspectives without insisting on their own views\, and the group strives to reach consensus through mutual understanding. A distinctive feature of many Bahá’í consultations is that they begin with a period of prayer\, creating a reflective and unified atmosphere before deliberation begins. \nIn this session\, we will examine one or two openings of Baháʼí consultations to explore how they are framed by the interactants. \nThe data is drawn from a corpus of recorded Baháʼí consultations\, part of the PhD research of Jean-Marie Nau (Educational Sciences\, Faculty of Humanities\, Education and Social Sciences\, University of Luxembourg)\, supervised by Assoc. Prof. Patrick Sunnen. This research investigates the question: \n“How are principles of unity & collective inquiry interactionally accomplished in Baháʼí consultations\, and what do these reveal about the wider applicability of this consultation model in diverse settings?”

SUMMARY:Data Session: 22nd January 2024\, Samira Ibnelkaïd: Micro-Coloniality in Everyday Interaction: Negotiating Norms\, Knowledge\, and Identity in Migrant Contexts
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nThis data session focuses on an interactional sequence among high-skilled migrants in Finland\, recorded during a dinner gathering at the home of one of the participants. The host is French-Indian\, and his guests are Italian\, German\, and Palestinian-Jordanian. Following dinner\, the group continues chatting in the living room. At some point\, the conversation turns to cycling. In this specific sequence\, the Italian guest questions her Palestinian-Jordanian friend about why she does not know how to bike. The latter responds by contextualizing her upbringing in Amman\, Jordan. I am interested in exploring how the White-Eurocentric lens shapes questioning practices and expected norms\, and how micro-coloniality is enacted in everyday social interactions. \nTranscript: \nDARG_Ibnelkaid_22_01_25_micro-coloniality

SUMMARY:CA for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Our next one-day CA for Beginners workshop will be held remotely on Jan 16th 2025. \nThe day will start at 10.00 am and end at 5.00 pm\, UK time. \nLed by Loughborough faculty Charles Antaki\, Emma Richardson\, Magnus Hamman\, Tilly Flint and Saul Albert\, the workshop is meant for anyone who has a growing interest in CA – perhaps they have heard of it\, come across it in their studies\, or are working in a group which uses it as an approach for research. It would also be useful for anyone starting out on research which may take them down the line of analysing talk in great detail. \nThe kinds of questions we will cover include:\n• What is the relationship between CA and discourse analysis?\n• Why does CA insist on the close analysis of talk\, with very detailed transcription?\n• What does CA us about what people are doing in everyday life?\n• Can we use CA to understand institutional encounters\, for example medical consultations or police interviews?\n• How can I use CA in my research? \nThe day will include hands-on group work on: – How to transcribe\, how to identify the components of turns – How to identify actions – How to build a collection – How to develop an argument in conversation analysis \nCost: £40 for waged or funded academics (staff members\, post-docs\, funded postgraduates..) If you are unwaged or unfunded\, please contact us to see about a waiver. \nIf you work for a commercial organisation and would like to attend\, please get in touch with us to discuss a fee. \nAttendance and registration: £40 for the day (online)\nPlease note: numbers are kept low. \nRegistration will be via the Loughborough University Online Store.\nPreference will be given to those already on the waiting list.\nFor more information: email Charles Antaki at this address: c.antaki@lboro.ac.uk.

DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nIntroduction and Focus: \nI’m curious whether the ways that participants in a Baháʼí consultation carry out their activities are\, or are not\, consistent with what authoritative texts say about that activity. For a recent PhD poster presentation\, I looked at a deliberation on a treatment method during a Baháʼí consultation: What Up- and Downgrades tell us about how participants convey their preferences. Further analytic insights are welcome. \nElements of Baháʼí consultation: \n\nFrank\, candid\, dispassionate\, unfettered\, and cordial\, courteous and loving expression of opinions.\nDetachment from personal views.\nWhen an idea is put forth it becomes at once the property of the group. Although this notion sounds simple\, it is perhaps the most profound principle of consultation.\nA means of harmonizing points of view\, promoting unity among community members.\nAimed at building consensus.\nConsultations do not always require a final decision; often\, the objective is simply to exchange views to clarify matters and foster a unified vision.\n\nSession Details: The transcript is part of a 55-minute Bahá’í consultation among three volunteer children’s class teachers and Amy\, a regional support giver. The extract starts 36 minutes into the consultation and lasts 6 minutes. \n

DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nContent Warning: Due to the sensitive nature of the data\, please do consider if and how you might be affected before deciding to attend. \nManaging talk about suicide \nThe data for this session are two audio recordings of calls to a mental health charity helpline based in the UK. In the extracts\, callers talk about having suicidal thoughts and ways of committing suicide. In one extract the caller seemingly ends the call prematurely. I’m particularly interested in how suicidal talk is managed by call-takers\, although all analytic insights would be very welcome. \n  \nTranscript: DARG transcript 27_11_2024

SUMMARY:Data Session: 13th November\, Hans-Joachim Belz: CA concepts visualized.
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: \nWith its comprehensive conceptualization of talk-in-interaction\, conversation analysis (CA) is beneficial to a wide range of academic and commercial endeavours. For many new to the field\, however\, the daunting amount of nuanced and heavily interconnected concepts can seem overwhelming at first. \nIn this session\, an early draft of a multi-layered visualization of CA’s concepts and their relations is presented. The “interactive map” is intended to serve as an orientation guide to beginners and intermediates. \nThe goal of the session is to provide an early assessment of the potential utility of the project and to gain input and feedback from CA experts and beginners alike. The project will be published under Creative Commons (freely available from Github and other sources). \nPapers: \nOutlook Epistemics_V241110 \nVisual CA Concepts_V241110 compressed

SUMMARY:Data session: 26th June\, Anca-Cristina Sterie - Decision-making in Advance Care Planning conversations with palliative patients
DESCRIPTION:  \nDARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: The extract comes from a collection of video-recorded Advance Care Planning discussions between palliative patients\, their health proxy and a physician. The objective is for the patient to make decisions about her/his future care plan\, especially about treatments and interventions he/she would want or not want (eg. being resuscitated\, going to intensive care)\, and to document them. Globally speaking\, various interventions can prolong life (“interventional care”)\, but for a patient with advanced disease\, these come at the cost of quality of life (such as being bedridden or hospitalized for a long time). Decisions made during Advance Care Planning apply if the patient would lose her/his capacity for decision-making\, and would be enacted by the health proxy. The physician’s role is that of a “facilitator”: to assist the patient in making these decisions\, to explain the interventions. \nTranscript: Anca_Data session 26 June

The analytic focus for this collection is on how gendered descriptions are used in the role-play activities of preschool aged children (aged 3-4 years old) in a nursery setting\, and how this may teach and uphold cis-heteronormativity. Broader observations are of course also welcome. \nDefinitions:\nCis-heteronormativity – the assumption that cisgender heterosexuality is the norm for relationships\nCisgender – someone whose gender identity of choice corresponds to the one assigned to them at birth \nTranscript: Gendered descriptions in preschool role play activities

Rather\, I want to present some considerations about the nature of the data analysis CA engages in\, specifically with respect to a redefined notion of rhetoric that I have been exploring on and off for the past few years (Siebers 2019).  It seems to me that there is a level in language use that is at once conscious or reflective (we might call this “owned”) as well as marked by unconscious processes. Yet this level (for want of a better word) is where we\, as communicators\, project ourselves into the world and into the relations we have with others. Insofar as linguistics conceives of its object of study as impersonal\, it blinds itself to this dimension of our lives in language. Perhaps we might say\, with a phrase borrowed from Roy Harris\, that we are not just language users but also language makers and that what Harris called the “lay perspective” is a constitutive aspect of language. The lived engagement with the language we speak and hear might be called rhetoric\, which would mean that what has traditionally been given that name is merely a distorted fragment of what should have been rhetoric’s main topic. I am interested in presenting as clearly as I can this notion of rhetoric and then to explore if it is of any use to the goals of conversation analysis. For the title of my talk I have chosen a bit of conversation discussed by Anita Pomerantz (2021\, p. 87)\, because it is a statement rich in the rhetoric I am trying to understand. \nReferences:\nSiebers\, J. 2019. SUMMARY:Data session: 29th May\, Lynn de Rijk: Human-nonhuman sense-making
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: In this data session\, we will look at interactions between humans and cats in a Dutch cat café. We are interested in the potential (mutual) sense-making we can observe (e.g.\, when is behavior treated as doing something – but perhaps we can also find other moments that could fall under observable sense-making). Broader observations are also very welcome.  \nTranscript: DARG_Transcript1_catcafe_LdR     DARG_Transcript2_catcafe_LdR
