SUMMARY:Data session: 3rd July\, Jean-Marie Nau: Participants following the Baháʼí model of consultation
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: The excerpts from the transcript provided are a Bahá’í consultation between a mother and daughter\, discussing medical decisions regarding chemotherapy treatment. I suggest looking at the excerpts to focus on displays of uncertainty (Stevanovic\, 2015). The data is part of a collection of 10 Baháʼí consultations\, with a possible research question: what do these Baháʼí consultations have in common? Can we talk about ‘doing Baháʼí consultation’?

SUMMARY:Data session: 26th June\, Anca-Cristina Sterie - Decision-making in Advance Care Planning conversations with palliative patients
DESCRIPTION:  \nDARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: The extract comes from a collection of video-recorded Advance Care Planning discussions between palliative patients\, their health proxy and a physician. The objective is for the patient to make decisions about her/his future care plan\, especially about treatments and interventions he/she would want or not want (eg. being resuscitated\, going to intensive care)\, and to document them. Globally speaking\, various interventions can prolong life (“interventional care”)\, but for a patient with advanced disease\, these come at the cost of quality of life (such as being bedridden or hospitalized for a long time). Decisions made during Advance Care Planning apply if the patient would lose her/his capacity for decision-making\, and would be enacted by the health proxy. The physician’s role is that of a “facilitator”: to assist the patient in making these decisions\, to explain the interventions. \nTranscript: Anca_Data session 26 June

SUMMARY:Data session: 19th June\, Katie Jordin: Gendered descriptions in preschool role play activities
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as an online data session: \nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: In this data session I will be presenting two short extracts from a collection I am building for my PhD research. The analytic focus for this collection is on how gendered descriptions are used in the role-play activities of preschool aged children (aged 3-4 years old) in a nursery setting\, and how this may teach and uphold cis-heteronormativity. Broader observations are of course also welcome. \nDefinitions:\nCis-heteronormativity – the assumption that cisgender heterosexuality is the norm for relationships\nCisgender – someone whose gender identity of choice corresponds to the one assigned to them at birth \nTranscript: Gendered descriptions in preschool role play activities

SUMMARY:Data session: 5th June\, Johan Siebers: “You’re a good rower\, honey”: Some methodological remarks on the relation between Conversation Analysis and Rhetoric
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid discussion session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV  (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: In this session\, I will not present data for collective discussion. Rather\, I want to present some considerations about the nature of the data analysis CA engages in\, specifically with respect to a redefined notion of rhetoric that I have been exploring on and off for the past few years (Siebers 2019).  It seems to me that there is a level in language use that is at once conscious or reflective (we might call this “owned”) as well as marked by unconscious processes. Yet this level (for want of a better word) is where we\, as communicators\, project ourselves into the world and into the relations we have with others. Insofar as linguistics conceives of its object of study as impersonal\, it blinds itself to this dimension of our lives in language. Perhaps we might say\, with a phrase borrowed from Roy Harris\, that we are not just language users but also language makers and that what Harris called the “lay perspective” is a constitutive aspect of language. The lived engagement with the language we speak and hear might be called rhetoric\, which would mean that what has traditionally been given that name is merely a distorted fragment of what should have been rhetoric’s main topic. I am interested in presenting as clearly as I can this notion of rhetoric and then to explore if it is of any use to the goals of conversation analysis. For the title of my talk I have chosen a bit of conversation discussed by Anita Pomerantz (2021\, p. 87)\, because it is a statement rich in the rhetoric I am trying to understand. \nReferences:\nSiebers\, J. 2019. SUMMARY:Data session: 8th May\, Marco Pino & David Edmonds: Misgendering as contested reality
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nOr on zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82657058417?pwd=b0NqMTFJK2ZxaGc2RFQ1VExmQUFPUT09.\nPassword: DARG. \nSession details: We have been working on misgendering for a while. We are starting to reflect on how some interactional instances of misgendering entail reality disjunctures (Pollner\, 1975). What we mean is that some instances of misgendering are not treated as such (i.e.\, as misgendering) by some of the participants within the interaction (e.g.\, those responsible for misgendering someone). Ultimately\, this boils down to how a person’s self-defined gender is treated as a contested reality in interaction. We will bring an instance that we think is conspicuous in this regard. This is part of a study that investigates misgendering as a form of social oppression and uses the framework of feminist conversation analysis. \nSensitive content alert: the data will contain instances of misgendering. \nTranscript: Case 9: Rubin Report Debate with Candace Owens and Blaire White

The focal meeting involves an employee with Ukrainian as his first language\, Russian as his second\, and some proficiency in English and Swedish\, and a manager with Swedish as his first language and English as his second. The primary objective is to explore how managers and employees conduct one-to-one meetings utilizing Google Translate. This investigation includes examining the reconstruction of professional and linguistic identities as they manifest in this socio-technical practice\, involving the interaction among individuals (manager\, employee)\, artifacts (such as cell phones)\, and physical spaces (like the production room). A key focus of the session will be the discussion of multimodal layering strategies employed in this meeting\, highlighting their significance in the context of Google Translate-mediated communication. \nTranscript: Multimodal Layerings

Using the methods and principles of Ethnomethodology (EM) and Conversation Analysis (CA)\, we have collected a wide range of publicly available data sources to display players’ mental health narratives\, including police traffic camera footage\, police documents and legal paperwork\, media interviews\, social media content and announcements. \nFor the purposes of this data session we will focus on a couple of extracts relating to Chandler Jones (American Footballer) who was sacked by the Las Vegas Raiders following some ‘erratic’ behaviour\, conspiratorial social media posts and after he violated a domestic violence temporary protective order. Jones continues posting on these themes. \nWe are also interested in picking up on debates in EMCA (and by extension discursive psychology) around mental health as an interactional and embodied phenomenon (as opposed to an internal or private mental state). \nTranscripts: Extract One \nExtract Two \nExtract Three

The interview takes place on the background of Donald Trump’s populist presidency and a growing notoriety of Musk’s own tweets on Twitter. Swisher is known for her critical\, at times confrontational interview style. During the excerpt the two participants discuss Musk’s relationship to the press\, his followers and factuality. Particular focus will be on the conversational projects of the two participants and how they go about achieving their goals. Of interest is also how Swisher manages her role as interviewer in the conflict between confronting the interviewee and at the same time maintaining his cooperation. On a more “mechanical” level it will be interesting to look at what role disfluencies play in the interaction and how disapproval is expressed.  \nTranscript: “Not all of them”

SUMMARY:Conversation analysis and healthcare interactions online workshop
DESCRIPTION:Online workshop in conversation analysis and healthcare interactions\n\nLed by by Marco Pino and Ruth Parry and co-organised by Charles Antaki\, Laura Jenkins\, and Magnus Hamann\nLoughborough University\nThursday 25th and Friday 26th January 2024\n\nConversation analysis (CA) is used increasingly in the scientific study of diverse health care and medical interactions\, ranging from primary to secondary and tertiary care settings. CA has been used to examine numerous activities\, from how patients introduce their problems to the ways in which medical decisions are negotiated and communicated. CA studies range from basic work on the fundamentals of human interaction\, to applied research aimed at contributing to service improvement. \nWhat does this workshop cover?\nThe workshop will provide an overview of the application of CA to healthcare interactions\, including interactions between medical doctors\, patients\, and (on occasions) family members\, and interactions with other healthcare professionals. The workshop will include in-depth information and practical work on CA’s methodology (including data analysis) and examination of some key findings of CA research in healthcare. The workshop aims to enable learning and enhancement of participants’ skills in CA’s methods of analysis. \nHow is the workshop structured?\nThis 2-day workshop will run from 10am to 3.30pm (GMT) on the first day and 9am-4pm (GMT) on the second day. It will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams. \nShort presentations by the facilitators will cover fundamental aspects of CA and its applications to the study of healthcare interactions. However\, workshop time will largely be dedicated to practical sessions and small-group assignments focusing on original data (provided by the facilitators) in a range of healthcare settings. There will be a strong emphasis on hands-on experience of working with data alongside feedback from and discussion with facilitators. We will ask participants to complete a short activity in their own time after the end of the first workshop day. \nWho is the workshop for?\nThe workshop is open to postgraduates\, post-docs\, researchers\, practitioners\, and faculty who have some familiarity with CA as a research methodology (including CA transcription conventions). Note: if are not already familiar with CA and want to attend this workshop\, we recommend that you first attend our workshop ‘CA for beginners’\, scheduled for the 18th of January 2024 (you will need to apply for this separately by contacting c.antaki@lboro.ac.uk). \nThe number of participants will be restricted to 20 in order to maximise opportunities for participation in the online environment. \nRegistration fee: – For employed academics\, practitioners\, and PhD students with training budgets: £100 – For unwaged academics\, practitioners\, and PhD students without training budgets: £25 – Commercial applicants: please get in touch with us to discuss your participation We encourage potential attenders who are unwaged or otherwise less able to afford the registration to contact the organisers as fees are negotiable in some circumstances. \nTo apply\nPlease send an email to m.pino@lboro.ac.uk introducing yourself and telling us about your existing knowledge of CA and your plans for using CA in your own research or practice. \nWe will reserve extra places for applications from regions where there are fewer EMCA training opportunities (see http://emcawiki.net/Where_to_study_EMCA). \nDeadline for applications: 15th December 2023.

DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session. Room B124 (Brockington Building\, Loughborough) or on zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82657058417?pwd=b0NqMTFJK2ZxaGc2RFQ1VExmQUFPUT09. password: DARG. \nSession details: The history of English language teaching (ELT) is deeply steeped in colonial ideologies of ‘one nation\, one language\,’ indicating that in the case of bilingual pupils\, their L1/s (first languages/s) should be kept out of the classrooms. Such puritanic language teaching ideologies were also applied in the Direct method\, which advocated for keeping languages separate\, similar to water-tight containers. With this background\, I want to explore this data from Sweden (grades 7-9)\, in which the teachers employ the English-only rule as well by policing each other’s and their own language choice (self-policing and other-policing). Swedish is deemed as a forbidden language. The participants’ indigenous way of interpreting the official policy is negotiated\, challenged and accomplished through micro-level language policy in interaction. To keep the “English-only” rule\, however\, alternate practices of policing emerge to avoid Swedish in the class.  In this data session\, I want to explore the role of language policing initiations in relation to the ongoing tasks in the classroom context.  \nTranscript: ‘No Swedish!’

SUMMARY:Data session: 10th January\, Mehmet Ali Icbay\, The order in motion: Interactional accomplishment in the traffic
\nSession details: This presentation is about demonstrating how the order in the traffic is accomplished by a group of drivers\, riders and pedestrians (e.g.\, road-users). The data is taken from a two-minute video-recorded traffic in Meskel Square in Addis Ababa. It is recorded as part of traffic surveillance and security from a bird’s eye view of an uncontrolled intersection at Meskel Square.  The sequential analyses aim to make observable how the vehicles and pedestrians in this four-way uncontrolled intersection achieve the order while they make available this order to each other. The analyses suggest that the interactional machinery that the road-users develop to navigate through the traffic is a simple ordinary accomplishment: They consistently calculate the speed\, distance and direction of others in the traffic.  \nTranscript: The order in motion: Interactional accomplishment in the traffic \n
