SUMMARY:Data Session: 6th May\, Robert Prettner: Vaccination discussions in a Dutch Well-Child Clinic
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: The collection consists of 11 video-recorded conversations between parents of young children and a doctor talking about childhood vaccination. Data is in Dutch and was collected at an anthroposophical Well-Child Clinic in the Netherlands. These specialized clinics take a holistic approach to health and vaccination and are therefore typically visited by vaccine-hesitant parents. In the selected fragments\, the doctor discussed the risks of various vaccine-preventable diseases and helps parents with assessing the risk factors of their unique situation. The analytic focus will be on the doctor’s questions to tailor risk assessments towards the parents’ individual situations (e.g.\, “Do you have a dog?”). What are the functions of such prompts relative to similar risk assessments lacking those prompts? \nTranscript on request.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 13th May\, Sinem Köklü: From Choices to Teams to Family: Categorization in Children’s Lunch and Dinner Talk
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: This session draws on data from my ongoing PhD research on language socialization in homoparental families\, based on video recordings of everyday interactions. The two excerpts come from mealtime situations within the same family. From a conversation-analytic and membership categorization perspective\, I examine how “teams” are constructed and negotiated in interaction. In the first excerpt\, team membership is organized through references to surnames and shared “seeds\,” alongside embodied resources such as gesture. In the second excerpt\, team formation emerges around a shared food preference\, before being taken up and reformulated by the father in relation to family membership. I’m interested in how participants use different resources to build categories of belonging\, and how “team” and “family” become linked in the course of the interaction. \nTranscript on request.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 20th May\, Jessica Robles & Josie Sterphone: "The data is the data"
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH0:09 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: This data session will examine a US broadcast exchange in which a journalist/White House correspondent interviews the US Secretary of Energy regarding recent policy documents around energy and climate change. We are interested in anything people notice but the project we’re working on has to do with how participants in disagreements manage discrepant accounts of reality.   \nTranscript on request.

SUMMARY:Data Session: 27th May\, Matthew Butler: Question design in the service of progressivity during WHO Surgical Safety Checklists
DESCRIPTION:DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:\nRoom SCH0:13 (Schofield Building Building\, Loughborough)\nZoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV\n(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG) \nSession details: This session draws on video-recorded data from high-fidelity in situ simulations of endoscopy procedures. We examine contrasting cases of endoscopy teams performing the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist\, focusing on how question design can either inhibit or sustain patient safety. In particular\, we explore the consequence of question design in enabling clinicians to solicit medically accurate —rather than interactionally preferred—responses is critical to accomplishing the institutional business at hand. \nTranscript on request.
