Session details: We have been working on misgendering for a while. We are starting to reflect on how some interactional instances of misgendering entail reality disjunctures (Pollner, 1975). What we mean is that some instances of misgendering are not treated as such (i.e., as misgendering) by some of the participants within the interaction (e.g., those responsible for misgendering someone). Ultimately, this boils down to how a person’s self-defined gender is treated as a contested reality in interaction. We will bring an instance that we think is conspicuous in this regard. This is part of a study that investigates misgendering as a form of social oppression and uses the framework of feminist conversation analysis.

Sensitive content alert: the data will contain instances of misgendering.
