DARG session: EMCA4RJ Corpus Teaching Examples

February 22, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm GMT

This week we are pleased to report that due to progress in the University and College Union’s negotiations with UK Universities, our planned strikes are temporarily paused. Unfortunately, the short notice means that our original data session with Christopher Elsey can’t go ahead as planned, but we have an alternative DARG session for you:
EMCA4RJ Teaching Corpus
This week at DARG Saul Albert will present the outcome of a collective effort by researchers associated with EMCA4RJ (https://emca4rj.conversationanalysis.org/) to construct a corpus of data for use in EM/CA training featuring more diverse groups of participants than is common in ‘classic’ EM/CA data. The session is intended to examine a collection of exemplary cases, intended to be used as drop-in additions for teaching core EM/CA concepts (turn-taking, sequence organisation, repair etc.). The session is also intended to critically discuss the potentials and limitations (pedagogical, political, methodological, etc.) of this approach to inclusivity, diversity, and representation in our construction of research/training data.
