Session details: In this data session, I aim to analyze a video-recorded interaction from a multilingual company in Sweden, where many employees communicate in languages other than Swedish or English. The focal meeting involves an employee with Ukrainian as his first language, Russian as his second, and some proficiency in English and Swedish, and a manager with Swedish as his first language and English as his second. The primary objective is to explore how managers and employees conduct one-to-one meetings utilizing Google Translate. This investigation includes examining the reconstruction of professional and linguistic identities as they manifest in this socio-technical practice, involving the interaction among individuals (manager, employee), artifacts (such as cell phones), and physical spaces (like the production room). A key focus of the session will be the discussion of multimodal layering strategies employed in this meeting, highlighting their significance in the context of Google Translate-mediated communication.
