February 14 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm GMT
DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session. Room B124 (Brockington Building, Loughborough) or on zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82657058417?pwd=b0NqMTFJK2ZxaGc2RFQ1VExmQUFPUT09. password: DARG.
Session details: This data session explores part of an on-going research project that draws on high profile instances of involuntary psychiatric detentions relating to professional sports players in the UK and US. Using the methods and principles of Ethnomethodology (EM) and Conversation Analysis (CA), we have collected a wide range of publicly available data sources to display players’ mental health narratives, including police traffic camera footage, police documents and legal paperwork, media interviews, social media content and announcements.
For the purposes of this data session we will focus on a couple of extracts relating to Chandler Jones (American Footballer) who was sacked by the Las Vegas Raiders following some ‘erratic’ behaviour, conspiratorial social media posts and after he violated a domestic violence temporary protective order. Jones continues posting on these themes.
We are also interested in picking up on debates in EMCA (and by extension discursive psychology) around mental health as an interactional and embodied phenomenon (as opposed to an internal or private mental state).
