Session description:
In this data session we will examine one or two examples of participants engaging in troubles talk wherein they formulate a description of a problem adjacent (or nearly adjacent) to an alternative description. Examples are from a collection of ordinary conversation and media interviews focusing on how participants describe situations in ways that are interpretable as “contrasts” highlighting a negative or complainable scenario in comparison with a preferable, ideal, or “normal” one; and what social actions participants are doing by mobilizing these contrasting descriptions. However, any other insights into the data are also welcome.
