Session details: This session draws on data from my ongoing PhD research on language socialization in homoparental families, based on video recordings of everyday interactions. The two excerpts come from mealtime situations within the same family. From a conversation-analytic and membership categorization perspective, I examine how “teams” are constructed and negotiated in interaction. In the first excerpt, team membership is organized through references to surnames and shared “seeds,” alongside embodied resources such as gesture. In the second excerpt, team formation emerges around a shared food preference, before being taken up and reformulated by the father in relation to family membership. I’m interested in how participants use different resources to build categories of belonging, and how “team” and “family” become linked in the course of the interaction.
