Data Session: 30th April 2025, Sanaa Hyder : Primary care consultations between General Practitioners and ethnic minority patients in the UK
DARG will run at 13:00-14:30 UK time as a hybrid data session:
Room SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building, Loughborough)
Zoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV (NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG)
Session details:
The patient (P) is a 50-year-old Pakistani man, who has
had surgery for ‘polyps’ in his nose in the past. He now has
problems with a blocked nose or a runny nose, which affects his work
as a TV presenter. P also complains about other recurring flu
symptoms, such as a fever. At the same time, he is seeking help for
his urological symptoms which are getting in the way of his ‘namaz’
(i.e., an Urdu word for ‘prayers’ done throughout the day as a
Muslim, for which you need to be physically clean). After a brief
examination, the General Practitioner (GP) diagnoses a chest
infection and prescribes a nasal spray and antibiotics. He also
shows the patient how to access his health records and results for
his previous medical tests, including for his urological symptoms
using the NHS app on the patient’s phone. The discussion below takes
place towards the end of the consultation. I am interested in how
participants make ‘culture’ relevant or orient to it in interactions
between General Practitioners (GPs) and ethnic minority patients.
