Data Session: 4th February, Marina Cantarutti: Doing gossip

Session details: This extract is part of a collection made for a research project on gossip in social interaction. The extract will show a conversation between two uni classmates at a university in the north of England. The participants engage in talk about absent third parties known to both of them, exchanging positive and negative assessments and experiences around their character. The data session will focus on whether this constitutes gossip and what “doing gossip” implies, how it is organised, how participants manage their entries and exits from it, what linguistic and multimodal features are deployed by participants. Observations on other aspects arising from the extract are also welcome!
