Data Session: 8th October, Sanaa Hyder: Storytelling in primary care consultations between General Practitioners and ethnic minority patients

October 8, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm BST

DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:
Room SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building, Loughborough)
Zoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV
(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG)

Session details: The patient (P) is a 47-year-old woman, who has a GP appointment to discuss her recent allergy flare-up (including itching, skin rash and breathing difficulties), and mental health symptoms. Following the opening of the GP consultation, the patient shares an account of her daughter calling the ambulance the night before as the patient had trouble breathing. The patient reports that her symptoms got better eventually after taking the allergy medication she was given, but her symptoms seem to be recurring and getting worse. The GP asks the patient briefly about her allergy symptoms and allergy tablets. The sequence presented in the extract is about the patient’s history, in relation to allergy testing. I am interested in the interactional practices used by participants to manage the telling of stories in consultations between General Practitioners (GPs) and ethnic minority patients.
