Data Session: 1st October, Saul Albert & Hetty Sargent: Living with Language Models: everyday talk involving an LLM-based virtual assistant

October 1, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm BST

DARG will run at 13:00-14:15 UK time as a hybrid data session:
Room SCH1:21 (Schofield Building Building, Loughborough)
Zoom registration link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpcOqgrjgiHtTW1buxXxCdo2SK5iFfK3iV
(NB: we are now collecting some basic information on who comes to DARG)

Session details: Large Language Models (LLMs) are an increasingly ubiquitous aspect of daily interaction. In this session we will look at video data recorded by a person living with a learning disability in their own home. They use a LLM-based virtual assistant as part of their daily routine of self-care, medication, and planning, as well as for scheduled conversations on given topics such as wrestling or technology. This will be a session of unmotivated looking but might also explore questions about ‘virtual companionship’, agency, and whether user-utterances in this environment constitute something like Goffmanian ‘self-talk’, or should be understood and analysed as interactionally organised activities.
